Hydro power without the water
Green Gravity Labs want to drop dense weights down mine shafts and harness the kinetic energy released to generate electricity. Once fallen the weights would be returned to elevation utilising renewable energy.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-05-21/old-mine-shafts-make-renewable-energy-green-gravity-port-kembla/102367724

Navigating miscarriage together
The Miscarriage Australia website offers evidence-based support for Australians affected by miscarriage while providing a referral source for healthcare providers. "The website is based on Miscarriage Australia research that found people want information and resources about miscarriage in the one place, informed by strong evidence and reputable experts and sources" says Dr Jade Bilardi. “My own experiences of miscarriage showed me clearly the huge difference between positive support experiences and poor support experiences." The website aims to become a leading source of trusted miscarriage information around Australia, referred to by pregnancy loss, perinatal mental health and healthcare organisations.https://miscarriageaustralia.com.au

“Listening to the people doesn’t diminish the government,”
Independent MP Allegra Spender is sponsoring efforts to break the “Gordian Knot” holding our country back from resolving the housing crisis.   As I have often pointed out, our major political parties are too focused on winning political power than resolving complex issues. We are seeing, yet again, initiatives to improve the situation held up by political point-scoring.   In an article in the SMH on 10/6/23 Peter Hartcher reviews the latest in “political intransigence” that is placing a “brick wall” in front of progress.   The call for a “Citizen’s Jury” should be heeded!https://www.smh.com.au/national/if-politicians-can-t-fix-the-housing-crisis-can-the-peopl

Renewables need a new type of Electricity Grid
Described as the “biggest change to the power system in history”, we are seeing a move to High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission grids around the world. These grids are overtaking alternating current/AC systems whose magnetic fields generate substantial losses in the process of transmission. And to facilitate the switching from AC to DC and back (given most of our household systems are AC) we now have the insulated gate bipolar transistor or IGBT.Maybe sounds technical, but with these two technologies, we will be able to better manage our grids for renewable energy.A thoroughly interesting development: https://www.economist.com/technology-quarterly/2023/04/05/electric-grids-fed-by-renewables-n
